[Technews] The new Apple iPad. Limited?
Looking at gadget sites from all over, the page refreshes are getting annoying. Above is a complication of the best shots so far from Engadget.
The Apple iPad doesn't seem to have a camera or run flash. The design of the device itself was also a disappointment when the fake images that popped up all this week looked better. It looks like a big logitech remote with that huge frame. Sorry Apple, but this wasn't what I was hoping for.

"It looks like a big logitech remote with that huge frame."
I agree David, but I guess, what's Apple's target audience. I don't think it's meant for the developers or artists. This seems more or less like for my parents.

Don't get me wrong, been using the iPhone and it's newer models since v1.1.3 and love it, but....iIt's actually not an iPhone++ but just an iPod++. Haven't seen a phone feature on this unit, and above all... when can we expect multi-tasking. I hate exiting apps all the time on a slick devices like the iPhone.

Well for $499 ($629 for wifi/3g), is not that bad at all, it has its ups and downs but its not that expensive!, everyone had very high expectations for the ipad, to bad it didnt meet them, anyway its a very cool new gadget!, specially to impress clients XD!!!! (NO CAMERA *sniff* *sniff*)

I agree, no camera is absolutely unacceptable.
I wonder if the fat edge is due to holding it with one hand, and having room for your thumb as to not affect the screen? But does it really need to be that fat??
Overall, I have an iPhone, I have a Mac. I don't really know if I need a device to bridge that gap when it's really not that big a gap to bridge for me anyway.

I don't know how I feel about it. It doesn't seem to be anything all that innovative. More like someone took an iPhone and made it bigger (and well took out the camera and is now charging you extra to have the wifi and 3g receivers built in). I like it, but I don't think this Apple fan boy is going to be rushing to stores to buy it just yet. I would really like to see it be pressure sensitive so I could use it like a Wacom Cintiq, but with more abilities... then I would be first in line...haha. Wishful thinking at it's best I suppose.

I am gonna use it as my bedside picture frame. Man! thats really an ugly piece of device that I have seen in years. What's the revolution in this device. Maybe the revolution in this picture frame is this that one can change its pictures daily, but like all the picture frames, you have to load the picture from outside, this device can't take a picture by itself (No camera). Then like all apple devices, u can't attach an external HDD, we are restricted with their 16, 32 and 64GB capacity. We can't save real data except for DOC or PDF files. Then as we see that there is no flash support, so 50% of the cool websites are not gonna run on this device. This is a true granny device. Maybe Steve is getting old and he needs something for himself, cuz it surely ain't gonna excite the young.
The things which it should've had are as follows:
1) Better and new design (not like a picture frame)
2) Display Port
3) USB Port
4) Front & Rear Camera
5) Better OS Interface
6) FM Radio
7) Phone feature
8) Able to convert the screen into an electronic ink display (e-paper), so it uses less power (as this device is meant for readers).
9) Firewire Port
I think I am not gonna buy such an expensive Picture Frame.
Two thumbs down for iPad.

No camera is just unacceptable.
That fat frame edge to edge is the same width as Steve jobs himself.
After all these complaints I know you will still be the first one to buy it :)

Guys guys chill out a little bit, is just the first version, like the iPhone was. This is part of a bigger marketing strategy, I'm sure it will have a camera and other features in next version. Now, about this one, it's great, you can say whatever you want David, but it's just look fantastic. Like the iPhone or the iPod Touch. The iPad is looking amazing and it will kill any kidle or whatever will stand in front of it :)

Btw, the iPad is like Kontain, it works better like this: "The iPad of blogging" Now I can even see some inspiration in the iPad from Kontain, it has that black frame :)))))
I bet you didn't thought about that black frame's usability? Isn't it?

Was anyone else waiting for Steve Jobs to whip out a pencil, start writing in a Word Processing programme, and have the device start converting each handwritten word into text instantly?
Or was that just me?
Anyhow - it looks like a total waste of money. And embarrassing to carry around.

I can’t find a good use for this device. No multitask? No memory slots? No camera? Instead of innovation this is going backwards. The touch screen is now not enough to sell a product. Buy a MacBook air instead.

I know a lot of people here would be like WTF but the iPad release was a good one. The whole "what no camera" is not really that big of a deal in my opinion. Would you really use this device for taking pics. I see the need for a camera for using skype or video conferencing but I don't really feel its a deal breaker.
The innovation does not necessarily lie in the device itself but how the user interacts with the applications built for the iPad. A bigger brighter better screen which offers seamless connectivity to the internet ( not a big fan of AT&T here though) opens up doors for a whole new breed of applications. Imagine using iWorks on a 320x480 screen?
I watch a lot of TV episodes on my iPod touch when I travel so a bigger brighter screen would be nice. Playing games especially board games like scrabble, reversi , chess which are multiplayer based will become more popular.
Being able to read and download new books from the app store is definitely a plus. I know a lot of friends who carry two devices iTouch and Kindle where I would personally prefer to carry just one device.
Lot of people are like why would I buy this when my laptop does it all ? Well why buy a iPod touch? You can play games , watch movies , listen to music all on your laptop as well. In the end it really depends on the needs of a individual and how the iPad satisfies those needs.

I really don't understand why there is no flash support. I could see the iPad being used as a device to browse the web while chilling on the couch or something, but what fun is that if one of the most used plugins isn't even supported?

I'd rather keep my iPod touch and spend $500 on .. a 3G iPod touch with a data plan?
-

@Hendrik - That's just because they have to make money with the AppStore. That's the big thing behind the iPhone, iPod and iPad. So who would make apps on their SDK if they unleash the flash???
And btw only the flash apps are not allowed, not the flash in the websites. Remeber that youtube's player is flash based an it works seamless. But as firdosht said, it is all about everyone choice and needs. It surely does fill my needs.
PS For David, i tried to edit this comment and my quote is gone...buggy?

They already have apps in the app store made by Flash CS5, i believe the South Park Avatar Creator was created using Flash. The youtube player itself only works due to youtube having mp4 encoding on all it's videos..
Anyway.. i like the iPad.. It's not as revolutionary as the iPhone but it will change the way many people interact with the internet. Why buy a PC or iMac when you only want to surf the web and look at photos? My mother spent $2000 buying a iMac last year just so she could do exactly that, i think the simplicity of the iPad would suit her.. uhhh.. lack of understanding of technology.. Maybe Steve Jobs is aiming this product at his age group, it sure looks like a iPod Touch for old people!

No multitasking, no camera, no Flash... Only Apple converting (Flash) developers to work for them. I have no reason to buy this. Just got an iPhone, don't need another one, only bigger.
Disappointment.

We will see how far they'll go with the flash...and regarding the youtube, if I understood well no matter what format the video is, they deliver it through a flash player. So it works. But anyway, my point was there's no problem browsing the websites in flash.

Extremely disappointed with this launch.
If they targeted this for business users instead of gamers it would have worked but now it's just the most expensive digital picture frame out there. Even iBook and the way online papers look will just give people iStrain.
If they added a front facing camera for web conf., flash support, call support, a stylus and a more robust OS it would have been the next big thing.
I'm sure people will buy it but it most definitely won't meet expectations. Where's the value?

After read some blogs, articles, watch a few videos of iPad, I'm starting to change my opinion and my vision about it. When I watched the keynote and the promo video at Apple's website, I looked to iPad with other eyes. Not from a designer eye, but with an usual consumer and for those, it's really great. No need to run Photoshop or other program like, no need to use at work at all. Just for entertainment... maybe, I said, maybe the next generation of iPad makes me feel better to buy one.

Sorry people who hate this device but the more I see it and read about the more I want one, this is really a great device and to have at home or work would be so great. After watching the release of the iPad the crowd is so quite during his presentation which was really bad, we all live in a time where we expect so much technology in our faces and I'm most of us expected much much more. Like it or hate it the iPad is here to stay.

Wait a moment what was really bad there? That it wasn't at his best, OK it's obvious, the man had a liver transplant few months ago and he works ever since...but besides that - let me quote this: "it was amazing and magical". At least that's what i saw back there.

so many people seem to hate it, apple has reinvigorated the tablet market with this product and now we see so many competitors suddenly showing up with their version all of a sudden.
All the concepts and fake images were simply just the latest Mac OS slapped on a full screen tablet!! come on people!! yeah those fake images looked great but running a full blown OS like that would require some serious grunt and there was never any indication how it would work from a usability point of view.
Seriously though there are some pretty amazing apps being developed just for this device that are simply stunning, take the Wired app for example which just blows my mind.
