I forget where I saw this, maybe Motionographer, but I'm blown away at the imagery and how it makes everything look like a mini universe.  The typography treatment is a nice touch.

Yeah, that's incredible. I wanna see more.

Hmmm... This makes me want to go out and buy another Nikon 105mm f/2.8 VR Micro to play with! (I sold my last copy to pay for my main portrait zoom lens, a 70-200/2.8 VR)

Macro is so much fun!  Amazing work here!

Yea, Macro rocks and that was a great example of it, in motion..... you can get similar results with the old manual Nikon lenses.... only about $80!

Great music by Sigur Ros at the end, the soundtrack to a million experimental videos (and I love it)

Nikon or Canon doesn't matter, it's the idea that makes the difference.

And here I find the difference.

    The MP-E 65mm is $1,000.

Find an old 35mm camera lens, a wide angle (say 28mm).

Reverse it and tape on the end of the video camera.

Zoom-in to get rid of vignetting.

    Job done.

    The setup here

This is why you need to zoom in

    Use a tripod  :-)

UK 5 pence coin image (field of view about 2mm, depth of field almost nothing)

    Then make a video perhaps...

I made the video, contact me at that YouTube account if you desire (1415W).

    Note:

Does not work with autofocus cameras.

The above is a Fujifilm S5600, and focus is fixed once you start to record video.

Here is your video. I really like the home made approach. Wonder how that would come out with a 5D mark ii?

"Wonder how that would come out with a 5D mark ii?"

    Not much different.

The Canon is a 21 Megapixel camera, 1080p video.

However, online, all that is squashed into 320p and 480 pixels wide.

So really, all the extra resolution is stripped out by the broadcast medium.

1080p is 1920 pixels wide. It will get squashed down to 480 pixels online. So the money you spent on all that resolution is largely wasted. Money spent on other features perhaps not, but on the sensor size probably because you won't be able to share stuff in their full glory with folks.

Below is a movie made using a 2048 pixel wide image frame. Here it is squashed down to 480pixels wide and a low bandwidth of 360p. Looks fine to me.

So I think it's all about using just-enough technology to get the art out there, rather than over-spending to get results you will never be able to share properly.

Spend less on the tools, more on the time and effort to make great content. The game-changer is the free access to a potentially Worldwide audience now. But it's a small screen - cut your technical cloth accordingly.

What do you think?
