Fi and CBSNews.com Launch "60 Minutes" Chrome App
NEW YORK, NY -- October 26, 2011 -- CBSNews.com issued their official press release announcing their collaboration with Fantasy Interactive (Fi) to launch the 60 Minutes Chrome App.
(CBS News) "60 Minutes," America's #1 news program, is the first primetime news magazine show to have its own standalone web application, launching today in the Chrome Web store. The new "60 Minutes" Chrome app delivers high-quality video of "60 Minutes" program content and debuts with last Sunday's interview of Steve Jobs's biographer, Walter Isaacson. The app will feature previous segments, clips, and new original content from the "60 Minutes" online series 60MinutesOvertime.com.
"It's exciting for us to have our '60 Minutes' content on Chrome," said CBS News Chairman and "60 Minutes" Executive Producer Jeff Fager. "It is a visually stunning experience that gives viewers a great way to watch our stories and the extra original content we produce each week."
New users of the app will experience the interview with Isaacson, who talks about the private and business life of one of the world's greatest innovators. Jobs gave Isaacson full access to his closest friends and family and opened up to the author in more than 40 interviews, some of which were tape-recorded. Last Sunday's "60 Minutes" also includes a story that focuses on children whose autism prevents normal speech and the breakthroughs they have made with the help of tablet computers and special applications that allow them to communicate.
These two stories powered the "60 Minutes" and "60 Minutes Overtime" sites to their biggest day this season for unique users, page views and streams. It was also the largest streaming day for "60 Minutes Overtime" since its launch a year ago.
Users of the Chrome app will be able to browse segments by categories such as Newsmakers, Politics, Science, Business, Sports, Entertainment and Nature, as well as by correspondent.
Using the latest technologies, including HTML5, CSS3 and animations, Fantasy Interactive and CBS worked together to create an elegant and interactive online news and entertainment experience for users.

Very nice app.
Btw are these two really low quality images (on your site + chrome app icon)? Or is it "just me"?

First off I think the designers did a great job as usual F-I... but I have a few comments/questions on the implementation, would love to hear your thoughts:
1. Unless I'm missing something, what makes this a "Chrome App"? To me it looks like it's basically just a web page that uses Chrome-only supported features, right?
2. So if it doesn't work on iPad why not just build it in Flash? The Chrome experience IMO is lacking, I've got a workstation-class laptop and it is performing choppy throughout. I can't help but think a lot of this would have been smoother in Flash.
3. I guess I just don't see a logical reason why you built it in HTML/CSS and not Flash, was it just because HTML5 is "in" or was it subsidized by Google or something?

After using this for awhile, I can say I truly love it.
I had a question regarding the side panel behavior:
Although the tabs can be used to activate (open) the side panel, I had an expectation that a second click on the active tab would close the panel. Is it just the typical open/close tab function that I'm expecting doesn't apply here because there are multiple tabs? Would it make sense to have one click activate the tab, with a second click on the active tab closing the panel?
I don't know... so I was wondering if I could get a quick run-down of this panel's functionality...
Thanks
