Hiring: Fi is Looking for Extremely Talented Designers

Displaying: 1 of 1

Do you know a talented designer that is passionate about getting their hands on a wide spectrum of projects, ranging from campaign sites, to portals, to applications for clients like Nintendo, Wacom, Porsche, National Geographic and EA? Fi would like to meet Designers you find inspiring, and would recommend to us.

Driven by passion for Design and Quality – an Fi designer must have a quality-pushing mindset, with a sharp eye for not only concept and execution, but the production and business facets of each client engagement.

Anton Repponen, Senior Designer and David Hugh Martin, Chief Creative Officer, have taken a moment to provide an overview of Fi Quality and Design down to the details. Let us know what you think about their video in the comments below. We are standing by to connect with Fi’s next designers.

From David/Anton

Here are some additional points from the creative team about what Fi is looking for in a new designer:

• A design position at Fi is what you make of it: you can focus heavily on Information Architecture, direct, lead and/or produce a design

• Designers at Fi are hands-on resources

• If you send a portfolio, please forward your best five pieces as jpegs; ensure those jpegs are not scaled down; they must be at 100%

• For designers looking to focus on experimental Flash campaign sites, Fi will probably not be the right fit

• We want designers hungry to design both kontain.com and cnn.com, on top of earning an FWA for a site well done

• As for your background, it doesn't matter if you are a creative director, art director, sr designer, designer, jr designer, intern etc... titles are not important here; we are looking for designers that care about design more than their ego; you can become anything you want to be at Fi; love design = love Fi

    Hey Krystian F,

In your projects, are you the one resposible for creating the information architecture? We are definatly looking for a designer that is capable of thinking independently as far as IA goes. Why not try applying through our contact form simply click on the "Send Portfolio" tab.

    Good luck!

  • daddymccoy21 39 months ago

It would be wonderful if Fi opened a West Coast office. While I am speaking for myself here, I do know of other extremely talented designers/developers hybrids who are continually searching for a firm like Fi in Los Angeles. I have found it hard to find a company that embodies the creative spirit and pixel perfection that Fi continually displays. The word "passion" is lacking here in Los Angeles, mainly because the client base is in entertainment (with absurd turn around times, creative restrictions for mass appeal, etc), and right now the lowest bid gets the job.

Anyway, I would have to pitch pretty hard to the wife and kids to move to SWE or NY! Imagine the look on my 4th graders face... tack sa mycket for the post!

  • krauser 39 months ago

Fi really does amazing things, the examples you show really capture the essence that Fi stands for. To work at Fi would be an ultimate experience.

I'm so glad my friend sent me over to this page. I love FI and have worked with a few FI alumni actually in the past. I'm applying now...look out for my email!

PS: thanks for making that video. it is a million times more helpful than words on a screen!

  • cicit 39 months ago

Good Idea!! next time we recruit just throw them our portfolio! when you think you can do similar thing with the same quality, you are hired!!

Btw David, need to swallow that apple before everybody drooling eheheh

  • Dalton Hurd 39 months ago

I think Fi's work is absolutely incredible! I've been working in web interface design for around 8 years now, and I would feel embarassed at even attempting to score a position at Fi. It just shows how dedicated, and amazing all of the Fi designers are at what they do!

  • upgrade4 39 months ago

I think we could say Think.Italian! We too are following FI since many years. I would shout what David says about passion for details, passion for design. So if anyone is looking for a place in Italy where you could share this passion, Upgrade4 is for you.

Thank you David for this post.

  • skittle 39 months ago

Oh man, so much to say on how great FI has been since the very start with not only design, but animation and development as well. I learned the basics of using colors and contrast from staring at old FI sites and trying to make similar designs for practice. You know something is well designed when everything makes sense just from a still image. I think that through having a video requesting for designers and not just text it really shows and expresses the passion FI has through emotion. Great post guys!

  • phillip 39 months ago

Love to see the passion that you guy's have, i'll send some JPEGs for sure.

  • jan 39 months ago

The screencast is awesome. It's so detailed. And you are right, you feel that everything is in-line, the way it's meant to be and close to nature's perfection in its ergonomy.

The only thing i don't like or let's say which makes me kind of sad is that most of your 'typolove' in it isn't possible or pretty difficult without Flash.

Anyways, i think Fi and kontain both have the design that the web is in need of.

  • JAL 39 months ago

I am currently in the US military, but I am contemplating separation as a Staff Sergeant after six years of service. Reason? Simply because I care about the details in design to the extent that you've professed in the video and my current role doesn't afford me the ability to pursue my creative interests and handicaps me to only pursue it in the wee hours of the night when I should be sleeping for the next day's mission. I know your firm is probably being slammed with interested parties right now and I don't begin to expect an immediate response if at all from such an iconic firm, but curiousity is getting the best of me. So I pose a question to Fi, although I am looking for no committment of course, would you need a designer immediately or (if you liked what you saw in the portfolio) would Fi be willing to wait the three-six months it takes to separate from the service Honorably? I appreciate any feedback you can offer. Thank you for your time!

  • Cobo 39 months ago

Well... from my point of view u guys do great work (tho i liked your stuff 3 yrs. ago much more) and have the right feeling for details and quality. I don't know how hard it is to find good designers for Fi (it's hard for my company) but maybe your job is getting even harder because of one certain reason.

As Fi Stockholm offered me a job 1,5yrs. ago i was thrilled, i would have loved to work in such an inspiring environment, but the problem for me was simply that Fi isn't paying very well.

Stockholm is an expensive place to live, and if i would move to sweden from an other country i would expect to get paid fair. Don't get me wrong, i'm not greedy or something, but good work should get paid well - and i think u guys do great work. Compared to other agencies and what friends of mine earn which are holding the same position i just feel that Fi isn't an option for me atm. But u never know... things may change in the future ;)

my 0.2 cents regarding this topic

  • Åsa 39 months ago

    Hi Cobo,

Fi offers market standard salaries with generous benefit packages and daily perks. But more importantly, we always look at individual potential and development in our employees; encouraging their drive to excel, where good work and growth is compensated accordingly.

Thank you all for sending inspiring portfolios to us!

We take on designers rain or shine, tomorrow or 3 months from now as long as the passion and detail is there in your work.

And what about working vía Internet. You know, working with people who are in their houses in a country far from NY.

Is that possible? I know that maybe not but anyway I ask.

  • lucianmarin 39 months ago

Why don't you guys look for those talentend designers? I bet some of them are already on Kontain.

  • John 39 months ago

Wow, how can you say that microsites are easier to build? I'm just amazed how you can think like that? flashy microsite is easy to build? ha funny yo.

I respect GUI designers. but you can't just say that the other stuffs are easier.

FI stuffs are great. but is it really creative? think about it.

  • JAL 39 months ago

I appreciate the prompt response to my question. I have one other; upon separation I would of course be looking for work. However, I also want to finish up a degree in Graphic Design or marketing through my MGIB benefits package - this unfortunately might not be enough to complete that degree. Does Fi offer a tuition assistance or reimbursement amenity in their benefits package? Do you have that posted somewhere that I just haven't seen as of yet? Assuming there are healthcare benefits apart of that package, is it supportive of someone such as myself who has a wife and child(ren)? Thank you for all of the information you've provided. I of course don't want to put the cart before the horse, however, and I look forward to submitting my portfolio in the future.

  • prabhakaran_g 39 months ago

Wow, thats gr8 news to hear from Fi. I am currently playing an important role in creating Interactive app's for Financial users and very proud to say that my users are very happy which is very motivation factor for me . But am not able to share any screens or design which I did for them since its secured area for a Banking company, I cannot say thats a drawback, but am sure I can prove my talent in someother way. One of my future dreams is to work in Fi, hope it comes true one fine day!

  • Ben 39 months ago

This is a joke, right? An apple ?..... "Juicy" ? .....

  • anton 39 months ago

It's great to hear FI growing!

"FI stuffs are great. but is it really creative? think about it." - I think FI simply knows boundries between being creative and userfriendly. And thats what design is really about. I truly love companies who does web for users not for art. So yes, it makes sense, why microsites are easier do make.. theres simply less details/components do be creative on:) ..ofcourse in microsites, theres a lot of stuff you can make (efects/visual stuff), but if I am simple user, i get bored of loading bar pretty fast and lately I dont really visit FWA either for that reason.

It always has been my dream do live in NY and work for FI .. but I don't feel good enough yet do take that jump. maybe next year

  • Henkka 39 months ago

Good web = good user experience and good user experience = mix of GUI, design, pixel perfection and details. How much F-I designers use time for projects? Ppl (clients) tend to want everything fast, which is always a bad thing for designer. Do your designers work 24/7? Or are you guys just that fast? ;)

    P.S. I love your work!

    Hello,

There is no deadline or winner as such. The Producer job positions are open in both Stockholm and New York as is the door for anybody of any interactive related profession that would like to be part of Fi.

Quoted from: fi - "Hello, There is no deadline or winner as such. The Producer job positions are open in both Stockholm and New York as is the door for anybody of any interactive related profession that would like to be part of Fi."

I'm not asking for the Producer job. I am asking for Designer. I sent you my cover letter with cv and portfolio few days ago and now I'm burning of curiosity.

  • waynesun 39 months ago

There's nothing better than a beautiful UI up for public display (whether it's on the net, on a gadget - anywhere). It's like having cookie dough ice cream after playing basketball in sweltering heat.

That being said, i'm always working on my own interface details in hopes of one day having a portfolio that i'd be proud not only to submit to F-i, but also one that I could look back and say "Yeah, I was OCD - but I also made something beautiful".

I'm sad and happy - happy that I finally got a little peek on some of the details that go into your interfaces; yet sad that I don't have anything to show for it yet.

I would like to be a part of Fi - but I need to make something that qualifies me for the team. You'll be hearing from me soon - that's for sure!

Would you guys accept a 'style sheet' of an application that doesn't exist? (a mock up). I've been itching to style a twitter application - but I can't seem to find a programmer to carry out the fit and finish that i'd like.

    Hej guys,

I have applied and been recommended by a recruiter as well... no reply. I live in Stockholm and share your creative vision so closely that it is silly that I haven't met you yet! :) What I wouldn't give to work in a company that actually cares about the details you talk about in that video... I moved to Europe ONLY for design, I am writing a book about communication psychology (interest from 8 American publishers!), and even spent the last two years working on an experimental interface for a company that competes with Google, Microsoft, AOL, etc... hit me back!

Like many i have loved your designs and more inspiring, for me, is the progression of creative you guys are doing! When i have done teachings to students i have stressed time and time again that design is in the details and that passion is something you can't design without.

I find i spend far too much time on the details too (or maybe not lol) looking into fonts, layout, alignment etc, pretty much what you guys are doing but i am finding that refinement does come with experience. Out of interest what would be the work rate for creative at Fi, do you have strict deadlines or actually some flexibility with the client in order to get things perfect?

Keep up the good work! Love the work as always!

    Hello Leigh,

Thank you for the kind words. We as any agency model, have deadlines. However, our deadlines are moulded by our team and client together. When designers design, we from the get go ensure each layer is named, each file is saved, to ensure a fluid and smooth process. The Fi Producers ensure change requests from the client (which is rare in most cases) are dealt with properly to ensure the designers do not have sleep over night on the computer. A designer can spend up to 8 weeks on a large portal and from 2 weeks on smaller projects, pending on the flow, pace and the client.

  • suBi 38 months ago

I just love the way you guys think at Fi, and of course the work shows the way you think... This is not my application. I want to recommend a very creative, detail-oriented and talented designer for Fi. His name is Mitra and his student portfolio is available at www.chiyapasal.com/mitra . He currently works with Axcept Media LLC as an interactive designer, but I've seen the way he works and how he processes information. He'd make a great match with Fi.

  • Leigh Taylor 38 months ago

    @Fi

Wow that would be ideal, a full 8 weeks, i can only dream of that amount of time at the minute lol. I think the last website design i did i had about 3 days only, scheduled to do the work for the design!

Great stuff guys, keep it up!

Hey Fi, was really inspired by this video so sent in an application. Fi is exactly the kind of company that I want to contribute to as a designer. I realise you have probably recieved a mad number of candidates, so the question is who do I need to bribe?

You really inspire me.. i can't belive there is someone who speaks about design with so much passion. Hi everyone,

we are absolutely amazed by all portfolios we have received - thank you! A few selected ones have been moved forward in the process, but since we continuously review portfolios, we recommend you talented Designers to continue to share your work with us.

Part of Fi's success lies in our close team-work between all different production roles, and we therefore require everyone to work in-house in either Stockholm or New York. But because of our experience with international hires, we are able to nicely support you all the way through a process of relocation to another country or city.

There are several locations being discussed for a third office in the future of Fi, so we will add your suggestions about Germany, LA and Denmark to our list ;-)

    Again, thanks and good luck!

I'm hearing nothing about concept, message or functionality...all about drop shadows and bevels, cheating .jpgs HA!...this is so amateur work. Hi ~

Do u guys still hiring ?

  • FlashIsDead 34 months ago

With all the social media and SEO/SEM frenzy its become almost impossible to push custom webdesign especially using Flash(TM) It seems more and more clients don't care so much about polished custom website design (unless your dealing with budgets from fortune 500/1000 clients which is about .01% of the market). Nowadays small and medium business want search exposure and quick ROI for the lowest costs is the latest trend. Flash(TM) is not practical when it comes to SEO, therefore developers and clients are abandoning it. Just look at the new Fi frontpage, no Flash(TM) even though they are still pushing it on their clients. Look at expensive Flash sites developed by 2advanced and PixelRanger. They have all abandoned Flash(TM) for static "searchable" components on their sites. Also, i find it hard to believe Fi is hiring anyone when everyone else is downsizing. Especially for "graphics artists". They may even be using these "job ops" posting to gather large amounts legitimate emails.

    Hello,

    * Yes we are growing in this economy. Our clients and demand has increased.

    * Clients care more than ever about polished well executed work. Our client demographic still remains to be in the fortune 500 area.

    * Flash should be used for the right job as should html. It's as simple as that.

Amazing how well you were able to get me (and many others) hooked on working for you guys! I'd love to be part of your team, and learn so much while being able to use and share my talent. I hope you could visit my flickr account, I sent my application already.
