Volunteering in Italy (Part I)
|
This summer was again a long vacation and again a volunteer work. I went to Italy, Tuscany (2 years ago I was already volunteering in Italy, but overall this was my 6th project) to help the civil service organization to renovate the 200 years old fountain in a small village of Bolgheri.
We lived on a hill in an amazing house (Photo 33) between Castagneto Carducci and Bolgheri with a terrace full of sweet grapes and a view to the Mediterranean Sea, olive plantations and long cypresses. We were 12 people, everyone from Europe this time, waking up at 6 AM to go to Bolgheri where the fountain was and where 200 hundred years ago, women of the village used to go and wash their clothes. When the heat was at it's peak, around 2 PM, we were going back home and spending the rest of the day as we wanted. We had bunch of rented bikes to go to the beach and to the village, almost everyone used to do about 40 km a day riding it on the hills of tuscany, 16 km to the town and another 4 to the beach from there.
We travelled a lot around the area, visited small villages, coast towns, one day we spent at the Elba Island, where emperor Napoleon I was exiled to after his forced abdication in 1814. (I have a lot of photos from there, will be in an upcoming entries).
I am putting the roof tiles up. (Watch in HD)

em, i wrote a pretty long comment but it posted the first sentance only!
I was saying that, this was one of your best entries, and the way you described the whole trip to me was well captured here. It's also a great testiment to anyone that spends their vacation helping others. If you need to embed HD from youtube, you just have to click the embed HD tag in the embed panel there. I can show you in the morning if you dont see it.

Great Anton! Castangneto Carducci/Bolgheri is a fantastic zone!
Your shots are outstanding...and what you've done during your vacation is honourable.
A lot of italians forgot how many treasures we have down here. So...thank you! :-)
Did you try "Guado al Tasso" wine? :-)

Great entry and awsome pictures!
Also a great way to spend your vacation and get to know loads of interesting people and tradition first hand in a small place like that. I love the idea of voluntaring like that since myself I also have way to much energy to just lay on a beach and it just feels great to work phisically and use muscels every now and then:)
Please post some more details about how you found this work, is it through a certain organisation??

Was this trip through a special program or was it a spur-of-the-moment thing that you and your friends decided to do? Excellent set by the way.
